Job description

Job Title: Youth Minister (Student Pastor)

West Waynesboro Church of Christ – Waynesboro, VA

Scope of Role

To serve as a spiritual leader and resource person in administering, leading, developing, and coordinating a comprehensive program of Christian education, discipleship, and community engagement for all youth (ages 2–18), with a special focus on forming life-long faith in Jesus Christ and integrating students and young adults into the life and mission of the church.

Accountability

Reports directly to the Senior Minister under the guidance and oversight of the Elders.

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Christian Education, Theology, Youth Ministry, Bible Studies, or related field from an accredited Bible College, University, or Seminary.
    • At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience as a volunteer leader in a children’s and/or youth ministry program.



General Responsibilities

  • Build relationships with youth (nursery through high school) and their families.
  • Plan, coordinate, and teach Biblically-centered youth programming that balances engagement and spiritual depth.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Minister to ensure all youth programs are integrated into the broader church life.
  • Develop and oversee age-appropriate learning goals and discipleship pathways.
  • Maintain office hours and invest in outside-the-office ministry, including outreach, school visitation, and community presence.
  • Schedule youth events in coordination with the church calendar to minimize conflicts.
  • Actively build partnerships with Christian camps, conventions, and youth organizations.
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteer youth workers and ministry leaders.

Essential Job Functions

Youth Programs & Discipleship

  • Lead all youth activities including Sunday School, Children’s Church, VBS, youth group, special events, and service projects.
  • Teach weekly youth classes and assist in developing curriculum.
  • Provide spiritual counseling and mentoring for youth.
  • Inspire a deeper relationship with Christ through regular teaching, events, and retreats.

Sunday School & Children’s Church

  • Serve as a primary teacher and equip others to lead well.
  • Lay foundations of faith among children that carry into middle and high school ministries.

Local Youth Outreach

  • Engage in community outreach targeting unchurched or disconnected youth.
  • Use evangelistic methods to grow the ministry and impact the local area.

Visitation & Presence

  • Regularly visit youth and their families, especially during times of illness, crisis, or need.
  • Support youth by attending school functions, extracurricular activities, and community events.

Vacation Bible School (VBS)

  • Plan, recruit, and implement a dynamic, Christ-centered VBS.
  • Manage volunteers and remain within budget while maximizing impact.

Administrative & Budget

  • Prepare and submit an annual youth ministry budget in cooperation with the Finance Chair and Senior Minister.
  • Maintain clear communication with staff and volunteers; provide regular reports to the Elders.
  • Keep the church secretary informed of schedules and appointments.

Support & Supervision

  • Participate actively in church outings, always ensuring youth are safe and cared for.
  • Travel with youth and oversee transportation when required.
  • Be available and on-call for pastoral emergencies.
  • Serve as the acting minister in the Senior Minister’s absence.

  • Strong Biblical knowledge and ability to teach Scripture faithfully.
  • Excellent relational skills with youth, parents, and volunteers.
  • Team-oriented leadership with the ability to organize and mobilize.
  • Humble, teachable spirit with passion for discipleship.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and pastoral care.
  • Competency in planning, budgeting, and communication tools.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Propresenter and other tools.
  • Capable of engaging on social media platforms as helpful for the ministry.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, speak, and hear regularly and able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Reasonable accommodations will be made as needed.

Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 30 days.
