Job description

The District School teacher builds relationships with students and partnerships with families. A teacher presents students with the curriculum and meaningful learning experiences that form students’ minds to curiously engage in learning and form hearts to know God’s love and truth.

The teacher is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating instruction based on specific goals and objectives established by the administrative and teaching teams. Work is performed under the supervision of the administrative team.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction

  • Demonstrates mastery of skills and knowledge associated with the lower elementary school grades and liberal arts content areas.
  • Adapts curriculum to live into the school’s educational model and approaches.
  • Plans and delivers daily instruction that results in student mastery and applying knowledge and skills using the school’s curriculum. Shows evidence of plans and preparation for daily classes.
  • Assesses students' learning ongoingly and adapts instruction to meet individual needs.
  • Develops formative and summative assessments of students' learning and uses results for further student instruction, evaluation, and placement.
  • Differentiated instruction by selecting and utilizing materials appropriate to students’ instructional levels.
  • Uses relevant technology purposefully to support and enhance instruction.

Classroom Management

  • Develops and maintains a safe and loving environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Creates a safe, respectful, and welcoming classroom environment.
  • Demonstrates effective classroom management aligned with the school’s academic model and approaches.
  • Maintains order and encourages students to set and maintain high standards of behavior in accordance with school guidelines regarding student behavior management.
  • Shepherds students in and out of the classroom. This may include but is not limited to prayer, active listening, calming activities, walks, and other co-regulation activities suggested by teachers, administration, families, and training.
  • Supervises students during instructional and non-instructional time (before school, after school, school activities, field trips, emergency drills, etc.).

Professional Development

  • Participates in school-based faculty and department meetings as scheduled.
  • Demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning through continuing professional development through school opportunities or independently.

Communication with Staff and Families

  • Collaborates with other faculty and staff in planning and delivering instruction to students.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relations with others.
  • Establishes welcoming and cooperative relationships between students' families and the school.
  • Communicates regularly with families and guardians.
  • Encourages family and community involvement and obtains information from families when requested.
  • Promptly returns families’ phone calls and answers emails.

Adherence to School Policy and Educational Law

  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, school policy, and administrative decisions.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal and local policies, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the administration and in accordance with the school board's policies and practices.

The successful teacher regularly demonstrates the following:

  • Spiritual: Regular church attendance; maturation in their walk with Christ; willingness to unreservedly affirm The District School’s Christian Faith Commitment.
  • Professional: Comprehensive knowledge of current best practices, techniques, and methodologies of instruction; the principles of educational assessments and principles and methods of differentiated instruction; effective classroom management; collaboration and support of Instructional Assistants; the needs and requirements of working with students with diverse learning needs; the principles and methods of educational research.
  • Skills: Excellent oral and written communication; effective use of technological instructional and communication tools; flexibility and the willingness to lean into a start-up school community.
  • Cultural: Believes in the possibility, promise, and potential of every student; demonstrated commitment to and skills in cross-cultural settings; demonstrated commitment to biblical justice, bridge building, and equity.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The successful candidate must hold a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution; a teaching license with endorsement in the elementary grades is recommended. Teachers not currently licensed may work with the school to pursue additional education or certifications as required by The District School’s accreditation process.
  • All teachers will receive CPR training, as well as training as Mandated Reporters and in trauma-informed care practices.
